Biennial of African Photography

Zineb Sedira, Shipwreck

Kader Attia, Rochers Carres, 2009

Enjoying these photos posted by We Make Money Not Art - the 8th Biennial of African Photography, which deals with issues of borders and boundaries. The whole post is worth a look here.

Also check out their post on the other show currently at the FotoMuseum in Antwerp - Congo (belge) and Congo Belge en images. A really interesting project documenting the geography and landmarks of the Belgian Congo, following a 50 year old tourist guidebook.

Strike Averted!

So my life didn't end up being turned upside-down, and it's back to day-to-day work here at the union. We settled just a few minutes past the midnight deadline, and walked away from the bargaining table with everything we asked for.
During the lead-up to the strike, New York publications examined the roles that doormen play in the city (somewhat unfairly, I should add, since this contract covered many many more positions than doormen in wealthy buildings).
I thought this op-ed in the Times today was a good summary of the unique place that doormen have in this city. Our president continually called our workers "part of the fabric of this city," and I think this letter nicely sums up why.

taking a break

I don't write that much about my job on this blog, but it's about to kick into overdrive. Unless something changes between now and midnight tonight, the residential building members of our union will be going on strike.

It should be on the news near you... I'll see you when it's all over.
